Russia is an unpredictable neighbor – Norwegian official

Erik Lahnstein

Norwegian State Secretary mentions Russia in rather undiplomatic terms.

Location

- Cooperation with Russia can be difficult. It is a big, demanding and unpredictable neighbor, said State Secretary Erik Lahnstein in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when explaining how the agreement with Russia on delimitation of the Barents Sea gives Norway credibility and positive political attention, Teknisk Ukeblad writes.

He did not go as far as to call Russia “a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma”, but said that the cultural differences are big and that the system you meet in Russia is completely different than in Norway.

Lahnstein, who is responsible for Norwegian policy in the High North, talked about future industrial development in Northern Norway at a seminar in Tromsø on Wednesday. The forum was part of the large Arctic Frontiers conference.
