The estimates of the population changes from January 2010 to January 2011 are published by Goskomstat, Russia’s statistic agency.
Four of the five Russian federal districts in the Barents Region have lost a significant numbers of residents since last year, in total 29,340 people.
Arkhangelsk Oblast is down more than 10,000 people, while Murmansk Oblast has 8,384 less inhabitants than last January. Earlier this week, BarentsObserver reported on the last population census for Russia, indicating that the population in Murmansk Oblast is down 10,8 percent since 2002. That is 96,400 inhabitants less in just eight years.
The Republic of Karelia is down 3,690 people year-on-year, while the population in the Republic of Komi is down 8,801 in the same one-year period.
Roskomstat’s statistics shows that Nenets Autonomous Okurg is the only area in Russian Barents that had an increase in citizens last year, not much - up 69 people.

In total, the population in Barents Russia is now 3,564,002 people.
