A delegation from Russia’s Northern Fleet has arrived in Whitehorse, Canada for the Operation NANOOK exercise.

Location

The delegation, led by Commander of the Kola Flotilla Rear Admiral Viktor Sokolov, will take part in the disaster relief part of the exercise as observers, the Ministry of Defense’s web site reads.

The scenario will employ Canadian Armed forces in the air and on land while providing support to territorial and municipal partners in the context of disaster relief operations. More specifically, the Canadian Armed Forces will be tasked to provide assistance to the Government of Yukon as a result of a notional wildfire that is threatening the City of Whitehorse and its surrounding areas.

Operation NANOOK is the largest Canadian Armed Forces annual operation in Canada’s North. The objectives of the operation include asserting Canada’s sovereignty over its northernmost regions and enhancing the Canadian Armed Forces’ ability to operate in Arctic conditions. The main focus during Operation NANOOK 2013 are supporting emergency management scenarios, responding to threats to public safety and assisting law enforcement agencies.

Over 1,000 participants from the Royal Canadian Navy, the Royal Canadian Air Force, and the Canadian Army, including the Canadian Rangers, are taking part this year, the National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces’s web site reads.
