Biggest military drill in Taimyr ever

Northern Fleet sends vessels to the Yenisey for drills.

The Russian Northern Fleet launches major war games on the banks of the Yenisey river.

Never before have the Russian Armed Forces engaged in such a major drill in the Taimyr region. Several Northern Fleet vessels are involved in the first part of what is a several-stage rehersal.

“It is the first time we have such a large military drill on the territory of the Taimyr”, regional leader Ildar Dzhuraev said in a recent meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Defence, the regional government press service informs.

The first stage of the drills unfolds in Dudinka, the strategically important port operated by mining company Norilsk Nickel. The Northern Fleet vessels “Georgiy Pobedonosets” and “Kondopoga”, as several more ships, are involved, newspaper Taimyrsky Telegraf reports.

The rehearsal also includes combat training in the area of the Norisk airport, the village of Alykel and the plant territory of the Norilsk Nickel melters. Almost all kind of branch forces, among them paratroopers, navy infantry, as well as aircrafts, helicopters, the Interior Ministry and the Ministry of Emmergency Situations are involved, telegraf.ru informs.

As previously reported, a group of Northern Fleet vessels on 16 August left Severomorsk and headed towards the Northern Sea Route. After the rehearsal in the Yenisey, the vessels will proceed to the New Siberian Islands. The frigate “Severomorsk” leads the vessel group.
