New road to Plesetsk space centre opened

Rocket launch at Plesetsk (mil.ru)

The strategically important Plesetsk space centre now has a modern road instead of the old gravel road that used to connect the only rocket launch base on Russian soil to the federal road system.

Location

Recently the part that connects Plesetsk with the town of Kargopol was opened. The 92 kilometers long road is constructed with German technology and has a price tag of RUB 36 million (app €840,000 per kilometer).

The road was opened by Head of the Russian Road Service Anatoly Chabunin and Arkhangelsk Oblast Governor Ilya Mikhalchuk, Pravda Severa writes.

Construction of the road linking Plesetsk to the federal highway M-8 started in 2007, by order of then President Vladimir Putin.

A total of RUB 5 billion (€121 million) is funded to upgrading of Plesetsk in 2011, BarentsObserver reported. New barracks, modernization of the energy system, the hospital and other healthcare facilities are all on the list of projects that will get funding.

The Plesetsk Cosmodrome is located about 200 km south of Arkhangelsk City. The cosmodrome is used especially for the launch of military satellites placed into high inclination and polar orbits since the range for falling debris is clear to the north which is largely uninhabited Arctic and polar terrain. Currently, the Soyuz rocket, Cosmos-3M, Rockot and Tsyklon are launched from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, Wikipedia informs.
