LKAB mines

The Swedish mining giant LKAB has discovered huge new reserves in one of its main iron ore mines in northern Sweden.

Location

According to the company, an estimated 60 million tons of additional ore has been found in the Malmberget mine in Gällivare, northern Sweden. The new reserves are worth more than 6 billion EUR, Dagens Industri reports.

The resources are believed to secure an additional 10-15 years of industrial production on site. About 1000 people today work with the Malmberget mine.

The LKAB (Luossavaara Kiirunavaara AktieBolag) is a 100 percent state-owned Swedish company. It extracts iron ore in Kiruna and Gällivare in northern Sweden. Most of the ore is transported by railway to Narvik in Norway, from where it is shipped to the world markets
