Norwegian explorer Børge Ousland has been able to sail his 31 feet sailboat through the Northeast Passage without any significant problems with ice.

Location

Ousland, who about two months ago set out from Oslo with a mission to sail through both the Northeast Passage and the Northwest Passage in one summer, has hardly experienced any problems with ice, the explorer told NRK.

BarentsObserver met the expedition during a stop in Kirkenes mid-July.

The Norwegian, who is sailing a 31-feet Trimaran Corsair together with Thorleif Thorleifsson and a Russian colleague, is currently in the Chukchii Sea in the Russian far eastern part of the Arctic.

-The most surprising with this trip is that we have hardly seen any animals at all. We have only seen animals, seals, walrus and polar bear where there has been ice, Ousland told the Norwegian broadcaster.

However, ice has been sparse. According to the expedition members, there has been hardly any problems with sailing in the area which normally is packed with ice.

-The pack ice is the engine in the food chain. When the pack ice disappears, the whole ecosystem changes, Ousland says.

-We do this because we are adventurous. However, if we manage this trip, it will be one of the most visual symbols on climate change, he adds.
