Film festivals in Inari and Tromsø

Two film festivals will take place in the Barents Region next week.

Location

The indigenous peoples’ film festival Skàbmagovat will be arranged for the 13th time in Inari, starting on January 19th.

The world premieres include: Anja Ahola’s documentary Finland Entered Sápmi, which discusses the negative impact of boarding schools on Sámi culture, Anneli Lappalainen’s Inari Sámi series of short films and Anstein Mikkelsen’s piece on northern lights Dancing Virgin. The programme also includes a recent documentary on the world famous Mari Boine as well as various Sámi animated short movies.

Skábmagovat also presents a selection of Sámi short films from recent years that will also be shown at various international film festivals. The programme includes a selection of movies by Canadian indigenous peoples selected by the festival’s new partner ImagineNATIVE from Toronto.

Tromsø International Film Festival (TIFF) will be arranged for the 21st time, in the week from January 18th to 23rd.

This year’s TIFF program is composed of three main strands. First, it is Aleksandr Sokurov, one of the world’s most well-known and respected filmmakers, through a selection of his non-fiction films virtually unknown to the Norwegian audience.

The second strand is defined geographically: A humble introduction to a country that is better known for its fantastic beaches than for its fantastic filmmakers—Thailand.

Thirdly, there will be a strand defined by a theme: conflict and resolution. This selection comes from a region most people associate with conflict, but these films tell stories that challenge our prejudices.
