Baltic Fleet research vessel ready for Northern Sea Route

Russia has started its first scientific circumnavigation of the globe in 30 years. The oceanographic research vessel “Admiral Vladimirsky” is now in Severomorsk, ready to sail the Northern Sea Route.

Location

The Baltic Fleet’s “Admiral Vladimirsky” startet its voyage around the globe in Kronstadt on August 18 and plans to return in the end of December.

The vessel will visit Murmansk, Dikson, Tiksi, Pevek, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Vancouver, Corinto, Havana and Brest. A group of experienced Northern Fleet officers will joint the crew for the cruise through the Notrthen Sea Route.

The aim of the cruise is collect data for correction of nautical charts, manuals and handbooks for sailing and to study navigational systems along the route. On the Northern Sea Route the crew will also be gathering information about the ice conditions and topography of the sea bottom, the Ministry of Defense’s web site reads.

This is Russia’s first circumnavigation of the globe in 30 years, according to MK.
