Nuclear icebreaker sails around Norway

28-year old “Rossiya” sails north towards Murmansk from the Gulf of Finland.

Location

Rossiya” is the oldest of Russia’s nuclear powered icebreaker still in operation. The vessel is powered with two nuclear reactors.

The icebreaker is Friday afternoon in the waters in between Sweden and Denmark and will sail into Norwegian waters in the south late Friday or during the night to Saturday, reports the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authorities.

Norwegian coastal services and radiation authorities are monitoring all risk vessels sailing the coast of Norway.

Rossiya” will follow the northbound pre-fixed traffic lanes along the coast of northern Norway and is expected to arrive at her homeport in Murmansk late Tuesday or Wednesday next week.
